Restoring history

A place of great cultural significance, planted with great respect.

Ecosystem: Sanctity of place

The Rangiriri Bypass is a section of the Waikato Expressway which snakes across the region helping transform New Zealand into a modern and vibrant economy.

Part of the realignment of State Highway 1 meant cutting through the Rangiriri Pa site, so NZTA restored and returned a section of the road to the local iwi, revealing the old historical battleground and Maori pa.

Located 4km south of Te Kauwhata, Rangiriri is the site of one of the fiercest, and bloodiest, battles of the Waikato land wars, fought on 20 November 1863. This land is of great significance to local iwi and a place to be respected, honoured and nurtured for every generation to come.

Ecovitalism: Kaitiakitanga

Landscaping of this special historical site took place in October and November of 2017 and at Kauri Park we were privileged to have been engaged by Natural Habitats as the plant supplier for this project of such historic, social and cultural significance and value.

Kauri Park supplied 2,300 plants that are native to this region and would stand, with dignity and honour, the tests of time in this place of great local and national importance.

Kauri Park

At Kauri Park, plant by plant, we’re growing a future for New Zealand.
