Asplenium oblongifolium
Shining spleenwort
Asplenium oblongifolium is an attractive fern which is endemic to New Zealand. It is found in coastal and lower montane areas of the North Island, Greymouth and Banks Peninsula in the South Island. It has a tufted habit with arching fronds up to 1.5m in length. The bright green ,shiny leaflets are up to 15cm long with slightly toothed margins.
Shining spleenwort is an easily grown fern that will cope in quite open conditions, but performs best in a shadier situation in good soil. This is an excellent fern to use under established trees as its moisture requirements are not high.
