Beilschemedia taraire

Beilschemeidia taraire is a large forest tree growing 8-10m high in cultivation. The leathery oval leaves are olive green when young and age to a dark glossy green, paler underneath and 18-15cm long. They are veined, with reddish brown tomentum. This tomentum also covers the young leaves and branches, adding to the tree’s attractive appearance.
The smooth dark brown bark often takes on a greyish tinge due to lichen growth. Taraire is naturally found in the northern half of the North Island. This tree requires a good moist soil and when young, can be frost tender. Its insignificant flowers are followed in Autumn by dark purple drupes that are attractive to Kereru (native pigeons). Propagation is by seed.
