Cyathea medullaris
Mamaku, Black mamaku, Black ponga, Black tree fern
Cyathea medullaris is the tallest and most common of our tree ferns reaching a height of 5-15m. As well as New Zealand, it is also found in Tasmania, Victoria and some other Pacific Islands. The mid-green fronds can be up to 5m long with black stems.
The trunk develops hexagonal patterns from where old fronds have dropped. Mamaku needs plenty of moisture during summer and shade or semi shade but will tolerate sunnier sites than other tree ferns, especially when given some shelter. Protect from frost when young. Be aware that older fronds too can suffer frost damage.
