Dicksonia squarrosa
Wheki, rough tree fern, harsh tree fern
Dicksonia squarrosa is found in forests throughout New Zealand. It grows to a height of 2-6m. The fronds which are 1.2-1.5m long, are rather harsh to touch. They are dark green on top and a paler yellowish green underneath. The stems of the dead fronds remain hanging after the leaves have dropped away.
Like other tree ferns, wheki looks good in groups, and indeed its rhizomatous roots can send up new plants at some distance from the parent. It is the fastest growing tree fern in terms of trunk formation and will tolerate a wide range of conditions including full sun and some wind but appreciates good moisture levels.
