NZ$0.00

Akeake, Purple akeake

Dodonaea viscosa purpurea is an upright small tree growing 3-7m, found from North Cape to Banks Peninsula in coastal and lowland scrub and forest. Akeake has long narrow light green leaves with slightly wavy margins. Male and female flowers occur on separate trees and the papery, creamy coloured seed capsules are quite a feature from summer to autumn.

Akeake makes an excellent screen or windbreak that can protect less hardy plants. It is tolerant of coastal wind and dryness, and can be clipped for hedging. Unpruned it can make an attractive small tree. Propagation by seed or cuttings.
