Desmoschoenus spiralis, Pingao, Golden sand sedge, Pikao

Desmoschoenus spiralis, commonly known as pingao, is a plant that inhabits coastal sand dunes. It was once widespread throughout New Zealand. It is becoming much less common as grazing animals reduce its numbers and humans put pressure on dune ecosystems, while introduced species such as marram grass are taking over its natural habitat.

It has been used extensively by Maori for weaving. It has thick underground rhizomes and grows 60-90cm high, with stiff somewhat curling, yellowish green to golden leaves. The colouring is at its best when the plant is grown in the open. It should be given a light or sandy well drained soil. Excellent for coastal plantings and sand dune stabilisation. Propagation by seed or division.
