Pepepe, broad leaved sedge
Machaerina sinclairii, commonly known as pepepe, is found throughout most of the North Island, often on cliff banks and road banks. It has slightly drooping bright green iris like leaves 30cm-1.5m long. The flowering stems are quite rigid, growing 50cm -1m, with long drooping panicles of fine rusty red flowers. Grows in sun or semi shade and likes a moist well drained soil, but can tolerate drier conditions. Propagation by seed or division.
