Kumarahou, gum-diggers soap, golden tainui

Pomaderris kumeraho is a small shrub or small tree that grows in clay soil in scrubby areas of the upper North Island. It grows to 2-3 m and has oval dark green somewhat wrinkled leaves. In spring it earns its name of golden tainui when the densely packed corymbs of bright yellow flowers appear.

This is a very showy plant useful for growing in poor soils. It will tolerate only light frosts. Kumarahou is rather short lived and temperamental in cultivation as it is prone to root rot so is best grown in exposed sites. It makes a useful filler while more permanent plantings are established. It is best known for its medicinal properties.
