Matai, black pine

Prumnopitys taxifolia, commonly known as matai, resembles miro, with similar distribution and growing to about the same size. This massive tree grows up to 25m in height with a trunk 2m in diameter. The leaves are slightly shorter than miro and the fruit born by the female tree are almost black. The juvenile form has drooping tangled branches with an orange hue and silvery foliage. Plants can be propagated from seed of from cuttings. Matai will tolerate drier soils than miro.
