Syzygium maire
Swamp Maire, Maire tawake, Waiwaka
Syzygium maire is a tree found in swampy areas throughout the North Island. It grows into a handsome buttressed tree of 5-10m, with a smooth grey trunk and small pointed oval olive-green leaves that are mottled and often blistered.
The small flowers have prominent stamens and are followed by red berries. A good tree for wet or swampy ground as it requires reasonable moisture levels all year round. Prefers some shelter. Propagation by seed or cutting.
