Myrsine australis, commonly known as mapau or matipo is a small tree found from sea level to 900m in scrub and forest margins throughout New Zealand. The narrow leaves are wavy edged and light green, speckled with red and reddish margins. The young branches are also reddish giving an attractive overall appearance. Will grow to about 3m and is happy in most situations. It can be trimmed to maintain a dense bushy shape. A good foliage plant.
