Tagasaste, Tree lucerne

Chamaecytisus palmensis, also known as Tagasaste or Tree Lucerne is a small, fast-growing 3-4m high tree. The leaves consist of 3 x 40mm long, narrow hairy leaflets and in winter and spring there appear numerous clusters of 12mm long white narrow pea shaped flowers, followed by flat seed pods. It is great for stock fodder, shelter and in particular, a pollen bearing species ideally suited for feeding bees during the winter and spring. It is a deep-rooted, drought tolerant, evergreen plant with nitrogen fixing characteristics. It makes an ideal nurse crop for native species and is attractive to birds.
