Libertia grandiflora

Mikoikoi, New Zealand iris

Libertia grandiflora is a large tufted plant with narrow flax like slightly drooping leaves. It forms a clump 50cm or more tall and in spring bears white 3 petalled flowers up to 3cm in diameter. They are followed by reddish to seed capsules that open and release their seed very quickly. Found in lowland and hill forests in the North Island and south to Nelson-Marlborough in the South Island.
